Every August in Danville, two things happen at once. Measure before you pack, not after. A single dorm's worth of furniture — a twin bed, a desk, a dresser, a few bins — fits comfortably in a 5×10 drive-up unit. That's our smallest size and it starts at $47 a month. If you're clearing a full bedroom to repurpose the room, a 10×10 is the honest call. Don't let anyone talk you into a 10×20 for a semester's worth of a single kid's things.
Break down the bed frame. It's the one job everyone skips and regrets. A disassembled frame stores flat against a wall and frees the floor for everything else. Bag the hardware and tape it to a rail.
Boxes over bags for anything soft. Comforters, pillows, and clothes go in sealed bins, not trash bags. Bags trap moisture, and a Southside Virginia August is humid enough to turn a forgotten bag of laundry into a problem by October.
Label toward the door. Store the semester's "might need it" items — extra bedding, a fan, off-season clothes — at the front of the unit. Our units are all drive-up, so a mid-semester run to grab a winter coat means pulling the car to the door, not hauling down a hallway.
Electronics need a plan. A mini-fridge, a monitor, a gaming console — these don't love a non-climate unit through late-summer heat. For a box of cables and a desk lamp, drive-up is fine.
